Professional energy audits generally go into great detail. A VES energy auditor will do a room-by-room examination, as well as a thorough examination of past utility bills.

Our professional, thorough energy audits use equipment such as blower doors, which measure the extent of leaks in the building envelope, duct blasters, which measure duct tightness, and infrared thermographic cameras, which reveal hard-to-detect areas of air infiltration and missing insulation.

Think of an energy audit as bringing your car to the mechanic when the check engine light comes on. The mechanic diagnoses the problem based on the customer’s report, mechanic’s inspection and specialized diagnostic equipment. The mechanic then makes a recommendation of what needs to be done and then fixes the car once approved (think energy improvements).

Similarly, a report is generated at the conclusion of the 3 to 4 hour survey, which details:

• The condition and efficiency of your heating, ventilation and cooling system (HVAC)
• The overall efficiency of your home, including primary areas of air leakage in your exterior walls, ceilings, doors and windows
• Low-cost ways you can improve energy efficiency and save energy
• Larger upgrades that will pay back their cost with energy savings within a relatively short period - usually 7 to 10 years

Preparing for an Energy Audit

Before a VES energy auditor visits your house/building, make a list of any existing problems such as condensation and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home’s/building’s yearly energy bills (you can get these from your utility company online). VES auditors use this information to establish what to look for during the audit. The auditor first examines the outside of the home to determine the size of the house and its features (i.e., wall area, number and size of windows and doors, material types and sizes, etc.).

VES uses an integrated “whole-house/building” approach that looks at your house/building as a system. A systems approach to improving energy efficiency looks at energy usage throughout the home/building to identify key ways to cut energy waste.
